Some historical notes on the poet

Emile Verhaeren was born in Saint-Amand on May 21, 1855. He studied law at the University of Louvain but pleaded few cases.

By the dawn of the 20th century, the poet had achieved worldwide fame. Verhaeren traveled across Europe, giving lectures, and King Albert I proclaimed him national poet. In 1911, he narrowly missed out on the Nobel Prize for Literature. During the First World War, Verhaeren, a militant pacifist, was distraught. He denounces the madness of war in fiery and poignant verses.

Walk in the footsteps of Verhaeren
